With the recent deaths of several students, Zero-tolerance has become a controversial issue in Fairfax County public high schools. Now, officials have begun to organize meetings to hear the public’s opinion. Jack Dale has asked every middle and high school principal to form a meeting to discuss his additional disciplinary recommendations still pending before the School Board. The ten recommendations Dale presented on March 30 included: parent notification at the earliest opportunity after any incident that might result in suspension or expulsion; shorten the timeline between the discipline incident and decision on disciplinary action; allow principals to conduct a preliminary review of individuals found to be in possession of his or her own prescription medication. We want to get as much parent and community feedback as possible,” Dale said. Time is short though as changes need to be made as soon as possible so that the SRR book can be printed over the summer.
