During the homecoming pep rally, the teachers were strangely absent from their usual posts along the side fence. Instead, they took matters into their own hands by storming the field for a surprise flash mob dance to the song Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO.
“The flash mob was formed to get the faculty psyched for Homecoming Week, to show our spirit, and to support the students,” said 10th grade US History Ms. Steele, who organized the mob.
This surprise not only helped to build school spirit but it also helped to bring the teachers, administrators, and students together as one. “If nothing else, I think it built community,” noted Ms. Steele.
But the flash mob is not the only way in which teachers have been more actively participating in school spirit this year. On Oct. 20, several teachers played solos during an orchestra concert, on toy instruments such as drums.
“It was a good opportunity [for students] to see their teachers in a different light,” said orchestra teacher Ms. Maguire.
Ninth grade biology teacher Mrs. Jones, who participated in both the flash mob and the orchestra concert, thinks that both events definitely helped to raise school spirit. “In the end, it is all about the school coming together as one and showing each other in fun ways that we do care,” she said.
The faculty’s push to raise school spirit demonstrates that they do want Langley as a school to succeed not only in the classrooms but also in the hallways and in the bleachers at the sporting events.
