Flute+Utopia=Flutopia. Consisting of high school wind players around the Washington DC area, this respected wind ensemble has over 60 members and plays concerts at George Mason University. And of those 60 members, four of them are Langley’s own: seniors Jenna Weida and Dana Rosenburg, along with sophomores Ben Parker and Katie Moody.
The director of Flutopia, Jennifer Lapple, is in the process of getting her Doctorate of Arts in performance and education. Lapple took Flutopia to perform at Carnegie Hall, a music center renowned around the nation, in February 2011. Lapple encourages all her students and helps to prepare them for their upcoming concerts and appearances. Flutopia has performed in many venues along the East Coast.
Langley students Weida, Rosenburg, Parker and Moody practice every Sunday with the rest of the Flutopia band members. They have an upcoming concert, Flutopia Fest, in February. Middle school musicians in the area will be invited to play along with the members of Flutopia. There will also be another concert at Strathmore (located in North Bethesda, Maryland).
“It’s really cool to have so many talented musicians who are focused on expression and funneling that into making incredible music,” said Weida. Sophomore Moody agreed, adding, “Being a part of Flutopia is a great experience and I have learned so much.”
