Everyone knows what to expect from the Langley yearbook: unforgettable memories, hilarious school pictures, and most importantly, something to remember the remarkable times of being a Langley High School student. But do we really know who the masterminds are behind the pages? For all your unanswered questions, senior editor-in-chief Andrew Spivey has the answers.
Cooper Middle School journalism was where his inspiration for being a part of the yearbook staff began. In addition, his three older siblings were also Langley yearbook Editors-in-Chief. But the road to becoming an Editor-in-Chief was an unconventional for Spivey.
Being a yearbook editor-in-chief is a very challenging and time consuming commitment. An Editor-in-Chief typically has to go to Yearbook camp and take two periods of Yearbook. “I wasn’t able to go to Yearbook camp last year because I went to Micronesia, but I did go two summers ago,” explained Spivey. “I also couldn’t take two periods of yearbook, so I think by a stroke of luck I got the job. Also, I’ve been involved with yearbook for so long that I felt qualified.”
Instead of doing jobs that he doesn’t enjoy as much, such as reporting and identifying people to interview, Spivey enjoys being the supervisor of the class. This year, Spivey is in different yearbook classes than his Co-Editor-in-Chief, senior Natalie Femia. This makes it very challenging to coordinate. “The hardest thing about being an Editor-in-Chief is finding time to meet with Natalie and organizing what happens during our two different class periods and bringing it all together,” said Spivey. His contributions to the yearbook are mainly editing and making the final call on spreads. “Natalie is all about design; she basically builds the yearbook and knows more about it than I do,” he said.
But Spivey’s life does not revolve solely around Yearbook. In his free time, he enjoys playing lacrosse, being in the SGA, and co-hosting Langley’s morning announcements.
Without the Editors-in-Chief, the yearbook wouldn’t be a success that it is today.
