Playing with the National Philharmonic Orchestra is something most people could never even dream of. But for sophomore harpist Alyssa Katahara, it’s reality.
Katahara auditioned for a chance to play with the renowned orchestra on Oct. 21. She found out the next day that she was one of four winners. “I was ecstatic and could not stop jumping up and down,” she said.
Alyssa is honored to have the opportunity to perform with an orchestra of such a high caliber. “I am excited and have enjoyed rehearsals with the outstanding Maestro Piotr Gajewski,” she said.
As a devoted musician since she was six years old, Katahara is always in search of competition. She hopes to attend a conservatory for college and believes any opportunity like this one will be beneficial for her aspiring career. Alyssa enjoys practicing the harp despite her busy schedule; it takes her mind off of everything and allows her to escape into a world of music.
Katahara will perform with the National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Strathmore Music Center on Nov. 30. “Though performing can be nerve racking, I really enjoy it and love making music for others to hear and appreciate,” she said.
