The sweet aroma of warm, delicious cupcakes lingers throughout the house as she instinctively pulls out her creation from the oven. With the grace of her hand, she grasps the icing and forms a swirl of perfection atop each cupcake.
Junior Hannah Fletcher has recently started her own cupcake business, Roundabout Cupcake, which was launched in January. Ever since, she has been busy with orders from friends, family and new customers. “The name popped into my head and I wasn’t able to stop thinking about it. I went on vistaprint.com and made my own items with the name Roundabout Cupcake on them, and that was the deciding factor,” said Fletcher.
Roundabout Cupcake has already made its debut at Langley with the theatre class. As a celebration for the end of the year, senior Jamie Joeyen-Waldorf bought some of Fletcher’s cupcakes for the entire class. “They were absolutely delicious, particularly the icing. I got a mixture of vanilla, chocolate and birthday cake flavors,” said Joeyen-Waldorf.
Junior Caroline Bollinger agrees with Joeyen-Waldorf, recalling her encounter with the treat. “The cupcakes were really good! I tried one with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, and it was definitely really well made,” said Bollinger.
Fletcher’s idea sparked when her friend desperately needed cupcakes for her party. After Fletcher saved her with homemade cupcakes, Fletcher knew that she was made for the cupcake industry. “The cupcakes turned out to be a success and I was inspired to make a business out of it,” she said.
Fletcher is currently responsible for all baking and decorating for the orders that she receives, aside from consulting with one of her close friends on ideas for flavors and embellishments.
Fletcher works diligently in her kitchen, always attempting ways to make her cupcakes unique to her business. As a way for her to get started, Fletcher’s father devoted a space in his house for her to feel as if she was entering a cupcake realm. “Wall decorations hang that are cupcake-related, and I have pink and white striped walls to give it a punch of color. The final decoration is my ‘Welcome to Roundabout Cupcake’ sign which gives the room that final touch,” she said.
As an aspiring entrepreneur, Fletcher knows she has a ways to go, but hopes that she is well on her way to cupcake success.
