For the arctic regions, this is everyday weather. For the United States, this has been a year of fluctuating temperatures, swirling storms and, yes, snow days. Record low temperatures have been reported across the country as Arctic air from the north continues to come downwards from the north, casting it cold hands over just about every corner of the country.
For states like North Carolina and Georgia, the snow has been problematic; with an average of 1-2 inches of snow in a year, officials of the areas tend to neglect the need for plows and other snow disrupting devices. Stories of massive pileups and accidents stretching for miles continue to circulate. And with the next front making its way towards us, February promises to end on a frigid note.
With over two weeks worth of school disrupted, FairFax County officials have turned to a number of options ranging from continuing their lessons via FCPS BlackBoard to cancelling teacher workdays and holidays. On average, a public high school must exhibit at least 1080 hours in a full year. And with three days allocated for snow, we’ve begun to cut into time that would normally be spent in the class room. Some staff members have even spoken of increasing the length of the school year. Rest assured though, seniors will be leaving at the old designated date. However, the pressure mounts as test days and missing tasks pile on.
FairFax counties decision to cancel school for weather related incidents is not an easy one; with over 100,000 students in a variety of grade levels and facilities on the line. Some staff members rise as early as 3 am in order to observe the weather and road conditions.
The dangers of opening school in less than stellar conditions weighs on the minds of everyone involved with the decision process; driving student’s must navigate icy roads and those who walk must do so on hazardous paths. And there is still reluctance.
Recently, FairFax officials have brought to light the plight of some students who receive a single hot meal a day; a lunch at Langley High School. Closing the school may deprive some of dining on their single hot meal of the day.
In the end though, final decisions can range from a 2 hour delay to the absolute cancellation of school. And whatever luxuries we may enjoy now, they might come back to haunt us in july.
