When I saw the trailer for The Vow for the first time, I had to see it. It looked slightly cheesy but very cute, who doesn’t love those types of movies? However, given all the excitement and publicity, when I finally saw it I was pretty disappointed.
The Vow is about a young couple, Leo (Channing Tatum) and Paige (Rachel McAdams) who get into a traumatizing car accident. Leo recovers but Paige suffers from some memory loss and doesn’t remember marrying her husband. She was originally a law student but later decided that she wanted to be an artist, so she moved to the city to become a sculptor where she met her husband. However after the car accident she doesn’t remember moving and becoming an artist; she only remembers being a law student and being engaged to her former fiancé. However, even though his wife doesn’t remember him, Leo believes that true love has a way of overcoming obstacles and decides that he will find a way to help Paige regain her memory.
I liked the idea of this movie when I first heard about it. It is very different from typical love stories. However the movie itself did not live up to what I had hoped for. After the beginning, it was continuously sad or upsetting, except for one happy scene in the middle which was immediately followed by the main character crying for no reason. This made the movie drag uncomfortably and left me feeling very unhappy. I was relieved when the end came because usually these types of movies have happy endings. However the end was probably the most upsetting part for me and left me feeling very unsatisfied. I’m still not quite sure if everything worked out for Leo and Paige or not.
I don’t know what the point of the movie really was because it was very confusing. I could never tell what the moral was. There were so many mixed emotions and values that I’m not sure which ones the movie was trying to portray. Overall I did not like this movie and do not recommend it.
