My Sunday night was well spent, to say the least. A mere $30 donation to the All Night Grad Party fund in exchange for a Capitol Steps ticket, allowed me to laugh hysterically for two hours and receive much-needed extra credit in AP Government. A win-win in my book.
Capitol Steps is a political satire group who humorously pokes fun at controversial issues and personalities.
Spot-on impersonations and musical renditions filled the auditorium as six talented actors and actresses took the stage as a medley of political favorites including Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Joe Biden, former General David Petraeus and presidential debate moderator Jim Lehrer.
These stand-out portrayals were some of my favorite, mostly because they were scarily accurate. I loved how the troop gave each character a distinguishing prop and life-like quirk unique to each figure, whether a nervous tick or a noticeable feature.
Aside from the inconveniently late 7pm start time, and the slightly lengthy timing of the show, it didn’t have many drawbacks.
Overall, this year’s show was much more enjoyable then the same performance I attended as a freshmen. My awkwardly unsure laughter and lack of political knowledge as a timid underclassmen was thankfully replaced this year by a slightly better comprehension and more realistic (faking of my) understanding of politics.
