At first, I was skeptical of ABC Family’s newest show, “Bunheads” when it first premiered. I mean the title seemed self-explanatory for a show that wouldn’t last more than one season. However, my opinion was changed when I was stuck in the universal dilemma of what to watch on TV while babysitting.
It was then that I decided, “What the heck, ‘Bunheads’ looks a lot better than a marathon of ‘Toddlers in Tiaras.’” With that brilliant statement in mind, I set down the remote, opened my ginger ale, and had my eyes glued to the TV for the next hour.
“Bunheads” is about a former ballerina who unhappily becomes a Las Vegas showgirl. An admirer, Hubbell Flowers, proposes to her and she says yes even though she barely knows him. After the wedding he brings her back to his small hometown, Paradise, California.
Soon after their move Hubbell is killed in a car accident, leaving his wife with his mother who owns a dance studio. The season picks up from there and begins the story of how Michelle adjusts her life to help Fanny, her mother-in-law, run the studio.
What I love the most about this show is that it isn’t the usual hackneyed new-person- in-town story. This show contains both the general story and side stories about the four featured teenage ballerina students that become close to Michelle.
Also, each and every one of the characters has a unique and relatable personality with witty lines that reference to pop culture and make me laugh out loud.
I definitely would recommend this show even if you have no interest in dance. “Bunheads” is relatable to everyone and has so much personality that I dare you to watch one episode and not fall in love with it.
