The Langley Choir had their first concert of the year on October 18th, which took place at Saint Luke Catholic Church in Mclean, Virginia. The madrigals, chamber, concert and treble choirs, as well as the choir club, performed in the concert.
“We had our four curricular choirs that meet during the school day, and we had our after school group called Voice Male perform, too,” Langley Choir teacher Caroline Player said.
In the first half of the concert, each choir performed two pieces, and after the break, the second half consisted of a combined piece called a seven-movement, where the entire choir performed seven songs straight with no breaks.
“We had all 75 of us singing their own pieces, and then there was an intermission, and the second half was this big combined piece,” Player said.
The combined piece was performed in Latin, not English, requiring the choir to sing in a language that many were not accustomed to. Despite that difficulty, however, students enjoyed performing the piece.
“My favorite part to perform was the really long piece we did at the end,” Sophomore choir student Sophia Ojo said. “It was definitely a challenge, though, because we had to sing in a whole other language.”
On top of this complexity, an organ was also needed for this combined piece. Because of this, the concert was located off-site of Langley at Saint Luke Catholic Church, as it contains a large organ.
“The organ was huge, and it was so cool to hear it with our voices,” Ojo said. “When it played, you could kind of feel it in the floor and the walls. It was a super amazing experience, and I had a lot of fun.”
All five choirs had to put in effort for the concert, and needed to work hard in order to make it a successful show.
“I feel like the concert is a celebration, since we put in all these hours and hard work at rehearsals,” said Player. “It’s all about sharing the music with our friends and family, and having a good time while doing it.”
