Every Tuesday and Thursday during Saxon Time, English rooms fill with students at the Saxon Writing Center. Half of these people are skilled senior writers, committed to improving the writing abilities of their peers; the other half are students looking to better their writing.
Ms. Broad, an AP English teacher who helped to begin this organization at Langley, is very excited about the program. “We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback from teachers and students,” she said. “It’s a very beneficial service in that peers can provide a different perspective than teachers can.”
Because the center has become so popular, a new class will be available at Langley next year, known as “Advanced Composition.” The central reason for the class is to provide more students with the services currently provided by the Saxon Writing Center. Those that are selected to take the class are chosen by Ms. Broad or Ms. Ludwig based on their writing skills and ability to work well with others. This group of students will spend the class tutoring whoever chooses to come in. Because Advanced Composition will be during lunch periods, students can spend part of their mid-day meal with a senior tutor and work on their writing.
“There is a high demand for the tutors and not enough time, 35 minutes is too short,” said Ms. Ludwig, another AP English teacher who helped begin the program. “That is why the Saxon Writing Center is being made into a class, along with the Saxon Time service being offered.”
In addition to students who can now take advantage of this new tutoring opportunity, those who have been selected to be tutors for “Advanced Composition” are also excited about the course. “It’s a great opportunity because you can help other students and also improve your own writing in the process,” said junior Madeline Kotoriy.
The Saxon Writing Center is an excellent resource. Whether you are going for Saxon Time this year or plan on spending a lunch or two there next year, you will not regret taking advantage of this opportunity.
