In a sea of red, four Langley SGA members observed with disbelief the spirit of the crowd around them. To gain insight about what made other schools’ pep rallies go so well, seniors Kaden Calderwood, Holly Dodd and Mikey Adams, and junior Lucy Gunter visited the McLean homecoming pep rally on Friday, Sep. 30.
“Compared to our job, it was so easy for McLean’s SGA,” said Langley SGA President Kaden Calderwood. Every year, McLean puts on the exact same performance for their students, and every year the crowd goes wild.
“Langley SGA, on the other hand, has to go to great lengths to get a chuckle out of the crowd,” stated Calderwood.
The SGA brainstormed about what went well for McLean’s pep rally, and looked for ways to improve Langley’s. Calderwood noted the fast, fluid nature of the festivities, as well as the crowd’s energy. Leadership will be borrowing structural ideas from McLean to use in Langley’s pep rallies, such as more people acting as emcees.
“The SGA can only do so much,” said leadership teacher Ms. Hamilton. “It has to come down to the students.”
Calderwood agreed, saying the student body needs to “meet the SGA halfway” if we want to see better pep rallies in the future.
