When it’s twenty-two degrees outside, people are usually cooped up at home, watching television and sipping on hot chocolate. The students of the Leadership Honor Society (LHS), however, were out and about making a change on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For them, it was “a day on, not a day off”.
On Monday, Jan. 16, nine members of the LHS worked with members of the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to improve the state of the Metropolitan Branch Trail in WashingtonD.C. Some of the activities that occurred during this event included clearing invasive species, mulching newly planted trees, clearing and brushing the foot path, and picking up trash. They were deemed to be the group that picked up the most trash.
The LHS officers were very excited to participate in this event. “Events like this are so much fun, because we are able to work together, with members of the greater Washingtonian area, to tackle a huge task, but break it down into smaller parts, and make a huge difference in a community,” said senior officer Christy Meyer.
The students worked all morning long to make a difference in the community, and create something important out of MLK Day. There were many excuses for not going to the event including extreme weather conditions, but the students were encouraged to make a difference.
“It was tremendously successful, we all had a great time helping our community, and we would all love to do an event like this again,” said Meyer.
