Last Monday the Community Service club paid a visit to Vincent Hall, a independent assisted living community for retired military officers and career government officers. The elderly at Vincent Hall do not receive many visitors, so the Community Service Club’s trip was a pleasant surprise.
“[The residents] live there either because their children are too busy to take care of them, or they have difficulties living by themselves,” said junior Jessica Zheng. Six Langley students went on the trip, where they did arts and crafts with the senior citizens. Each student was assigned a resident to work with.
“I was assigned to a lovely elder lady named Madelyn. She was the cutest thing!” said senior Rana Halabi. “All the students could hear her singing before we even met up with them. She would sing on and on and on, humming to herself and every time I would repeat what it was she was singing, she would laugh and say ‘Oh boy.’”
Some of the residents were hesitant about the visit at first. “When we got there, many residents looked at us very curiously and surprisedly,” said Zheng. But eventually the citizens all warmed up and enjoyed the company.
“The residents absolutely loved being able to socialize and interact with us, and they told the most unbelievable stories,” said junior Brittany Kim.
Due to the success of the trip, the Community Service Club hopes to sponsor another trip to an elderly home again soon.
