Every Saxon Time, groups swarm into the library, desperately searching for an available computer. Students need to check Blackboard, print out homework, and finish assignments. However, finding a computer might get harder due to recent incidents of computer vandalism in the library.
In early January, three laptops had many of their keys ripped off the keyboards. “Keys were yanked out and some keys were switched with each other,” said librarian Mr. Philip Clark of damage inflicted on laptop keys in early January.
Administrator Ms. Jessica Statz said that students caught vandalizing school property can be suspended and forced to pay restitution for the damage. “It’s an immature act because it’s harming other students,” Ms. Statz said.
Vandals could also be charged with theft because, in many instances, they walked off with the broken keys.
The administration and the library staff are trying to make teachers and students aware of the vandalism incidents, in hopes of deterring students from harming the computers. Notices about the computer vandalism have been featured on the morning video announcements and teachers who take their classes to the library are being warned.
Langley Technology Specialist Mr. Nick Choobineh was especially disappointed about the recent vandalism: “If there are thirty computers and the vandals destroy ten, that’s ten students who can’t print their papers and that’s ten students that don’t get a good grade.”
