Saxon Scope Executive Sports Editor Emily Flessas sat down with senior Kyle Dear to talk about his involvement with “Stop Hunger Now.”
Saxon Scope: What are your expectations?
Kyle Dear: My expectation is simply to have as many kids volunteer as possible. Not a large percentage of high schoolers are particularly interested with community service, however this is a great and frankly easy way to start.
SS: Why are you leading this project?
KD: I was placed in charge of the Langley Stop Hunger Now effort by the Ms. Hamilton and Mrs. Landis–our fantastic leadership teachers–who I suppose felt I could do the job well.
SS: How many participants do you expect?
KD: Although I do not necessarily have a set goal, if we could get 60 Langley students to participate on either Friday or Saturday I would call it a resounding success. I haven’t mentioned it yet, but tomorrow I intend to go on the morning announcements and pledge to wear sweatpants for a week if we meet that goal.
SS: Why should people join?
KD: It’s a fun and easy way to help the community or fulfill any requirements. On Friday all anyone would be doing is unloading a truck and Saturday is all meal preparation. It is also important for volunteers to understand that you only need to contribute about a three hour shift.
