New to Langley, the math department is offering a new course; probability/statistics with trigonometry. In the past, only regular prob/stat had been offered. This gives students an opportunity to advance their college applications. “I think having this new class is great because I know most colleges look for trig and this gives us the opportunity,” said junior Ida Rezvani.
Since next school year will be the first year for the class, there is not yet a set description of the curriculum. Some students say that because the program is so new, they won’t be selecting it. Junior Roxana Jahanbani said she’d “rather just take regular prob/stat because trigonometry sounds too complicated to incorporate into the class.”
Some students say, too, that the class is unnecessary for students who don’t need trig for their college applications. Junior Julia Pierce said, “If people want to take prob/stat with trig, that’s their decision, but it’s risky because it’s an entirely new course to Langley, and for teachers too.”
The course is intended to be a hybrid between precalculus and prob/stat, so students looking for a mix of the two should consider the class, while also considering the risks of taking a first-year course.
