Just a passion for history and learning was all it took for 9th grade history teacher, Ms. Melinda Conner to decide to start her new club “History through Films”. Although it’s not an official after-school club yet, Conner has high hopes for its future.
The club would meet after school on given days and watch historical movies like “Gone with the Wind” to later analyze them. “There are other [movies] like ‘Star Wars’ that you can draw all these analogies between ‘Star Wars’ and the end of the Roman Empire to the beginning,” Ms. Conner said, “Looking at my teaching schedule I don’t have time to cover fun things like this and I felt like it was really missing.”
Through this club, students are hoping to learn more in-depth details and get a firsthand view on the subjects studied at Langley. “I think it’s a great idea because I’m a visual learner, and there’s probably a lot I haven’t learned about the history we’ve covered that I would be able to through [the movies],” freshman Shana Cave said.
The club will also provide a sense of a first-person view on what the people of these time periods experienced. It hopes to get started next year so eager history students can join as soon as possible.
