Since Mr. Robert Culbertson, physics teacher and Langley science fair coordinator, left to Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, Langley has appointed two new coordinators: biology teacher Mr. Jeromy Gilman, and astronomy teacher Ms. Sarah Ell.
They will be in charge of overseeing the annual Langley Science Fair, which takes place in late January or early February.
Students can enter the fair after a science fair sponsor – a science teacher – approves his or her project. Freshmen in honors science are required to work on a project, and upperclassmen in honors science can choose to work on a science fair project for the Independent Research Project (IRP) requirement. Their teachers pick the projects that can advance to the school fair.
From school fair, First Prize winners of each category advance to the Fairfax County Regional Fair in March. First Prize winners from Regional Fair qualify for the Virginia State Fair, while ten Grand Prize winners qualify for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, CA.
