Signing up for classes is always stressful. However, with the junior year burden of AP classes, students feel pressure to take challenging classes that may be overwhelming.
Next year, students may have found a compromise.
For the 2014-15 year, juniors have the option to enroll in AP Physics 1, a course that is, according to counselors, the same level as the generic Honors Physics class.
As the class was previously only available to seniors, it has now been split into two parts: AP Physics 1 for juniors, and AP Physics 2 for seniors; however, students who complete the first class aren’t required to take the second.
This is a great option for rising juniors, as although it still may be challenging, it is an AP class with a little less complexity. The class has become an interest of many, as some might struggle in math and science yet are still looking for the challenge of multiple AP courses.
“It’s really important to me to keep up a hard schedule, so this class is perfect because it may not be college level curriculum but you get the advantages,” rising junior Stephanie Sipple said.
With college looming near, it’s a viable option for those looking to add more depth to their applications.
Langley Guidance Counselors are strongly emphasizing the benefits of taking this new course. As it’s an AP, students receive a whole point boost to their GPA. Along with this, students enrolled in AP Physics aren’t required to do the Science Fair, however Honors students are.
“I’m excited to take it because I like science and this way I get another AP class. It’s still probably hard, but probably not compared to what another AP science class would be,” said rising junior Brittany Lund.
