Mr. Elam Hertzler, Langley’s founding Principal who opened the school to its first students in 1965, returned to visit the school he once led.
Hertzler, for whom the Orchestra Hallway is named, was brought in by FCPS in April 1965 to select the faculty and prepare the new school for that coming September.
As Langley’s first principal, Mr. Hertzler introduced business classes, made the arts a priority, and ensured that sports would never outshine Langley’s academics success.
Current Langley Principal Mr. Matt Ragone along with Ms. Jamsheed, the Principal’s Administrative Assistant, took Hertzler and his wife, Janet, on a tour of the soon-to-be renovated school.
During his time as a FCPS Principal, Hertzler oversaw the opening of three new high schools in the county, Langley being the last before he took a job with the Federal Government.
Hertzler’s own daughter was a student at Langley back in 1967.
Hertzler and his wife have visited Langley over the years, and Mr. Ragone gave the two an overview of the renovations the school will be undergoing over the next few years.
The Hertzler’s currently reside in Florida and hope to return to Langley after renovations are complete to visit the newly refurbished school.
