There’s just something about the summer season that sets up new breeding ground for relationships. Be it the tranquil sunsets, carefree outlook or beach setting, the summer makes us all in the mood for love. But, more obstacles exist in the summer than those apparent during the structured school year.
Your summer relationship can turn out one of two ways: it can flow effortlessly like the tide or wipeout like a beached whale. More than likely, it will be the latter. I have to point out though, that every relationship is different. It really depends on how long you have been dating your significant other and your ability to solve problems together.
That said, a majority of relationships can’t survive the summer. Often, school year relationships don’t have the foundation to withstand the issues presented by summer, such as distance apart each day, differing vacation schedules and part-time jobs. The last thing you want to feel during your summer—a time when you can finally relax—is tied down.
“Summer gives you the chance to let go and be free, and that can’t happen if you’re tied down and worrying about your relationship,” said sophomore Kaitryn Evans.
Let yourself experience the freedom of summer, even if it means ending a relationship with someone you care about, or putting it on hold until the fall. Summer is fleeting and before you know it, it’ll be over. If you’re stuck in a relationship, you’ll only resent your significant other for holding you back.
