Essays. Projects. College applications. Social drama. Sports. Activities. And as if dealing with all the everyday pressures of high school isn’t already enough, many Langley students arrived at school this year to find out that several counselors whom
they have gotten to know over the past few years had been reassigned due to budget cuts.
“All of the counselors are up for the challenge,” said counselor Mr. Ready.
“The counselors are committed as a department to work together and do our best for the students,” said Director of Student Services Ms. Williams.
However, this does not make up for the stress the counselor reassignments have caused students, especially seniors.
“This year it will be difficult for students to confide in their counselors and to go to them about the many questions they have, because they have only briefly met their new counselor and do not know what he/she is like,” said junior Nika Rahini.
Ms. Williams acknowledged that the situation will be especially challenging for the seniors. It is extremely unfair for seniors to be assigned a new counselor because they have really gotten to know their previous counselor over the past three years. The most stressful aspect of having a new counselor is that all counselors are required to write a college recommendation for their seniors. Many seniors have only met the counselor who will be writing their college recommendation once or twice. The counselors’ lack of knowledge on this year’s group of seniors will make it harder for them to write an accurate recommendation, despite the guidance department’s new
policy of closing their offices every Friday to write recommendations.
