You’re walking the halls of Langley and for some reason, it seems devoid of something that makes Langley Langley. It’s not a Wednesday morning, no. In fact, it’s in the middle of the day on a Tuesday. So what’s different?
It’s Senior Skip Day. That’s what’s different.
No, this day is not an official holiday on the FCPS calendar. Orchestrated by those who consider themselves the “leaders” of the senior class, it’s a day where many seniors decide to simply take the day off.
“Senior skip days are a novel idea and pretty useful. However, the senior class should better plan when they happen,” said senior Alex Yoon.
Sure, skipping school for a day might be fun, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not responsible for the work that you’re missing. School still goes on, classes still go on, and teachers still teach. Missing just one day can result in an enormous load of make-up quizzes, tests and work that takes several days to finish.
Another thing that bothers me about Senior Skip Day is that the seniors who do show up to school are sometimes rewarded with extra credit. Just because you show up to school doesn’t mean you should necessarily get a reward. As one teacher said, “Why should I reward you for doing something that you’re already supposed to do?”
Next time senior skip day rolls around, keep in mind that while skipping might bring temporary fun, it’ll bring long term work.
