Yes Langley, we are getting a turf field soon. In fact, we are almost exactly half way (financially) to securing the coveted field. Some people are saying we have been putting too much emphasis on a project that will only affect such a small segment of the school’s student population, when we could be addressing other apparent ills (primarily structural in nature) at Langley. Some are questioning why a relatively small synthetic plot of land is being given so much priority. However, the largest benefits of turf are more than skin deep.
While yes, the most dramatic and immediate change with turf will be will be significant increases in efficiency within Langley sports programs, a turf field will prove to be a long term financial benefit to the school. This will allow the school to spend more money on the other, more visible things it needs, such as renovations and updated equipment. Right now, the grass field is a major hindrance. Director of Student Activities Mr. Geoff Noto has estimated that just the one stadium field costs $15,000 a year to maintain. According to Mr. Noto, it requires countless hours of manpower for mowing and thousands of gallons of water. In comparison, turf requires hardly any significant maintenance (only a replacement every ten years and infrequent pellet dispensing.)
Turf could set a precedent for more efficient and ecologically safe facilities at Langley. What’s more, the funding for the turf field is being provided for 100% by community donations which speaks to its support basis. Taking all of the collective benefits of “turfing” Langley, it is clear that it is the right decision to move forward with the project so we can tackle the next one.
