In a contest where both teams were seemingly short-handed on the bench, the Saxons’ Ice Hockey team cruised to a 6-1 win against Paul VI on an evening when basketball was the main event.
At first, it appeared that the game would be a close one when a Paul VI player scored two minutes in the game to take the lead.
But the luck for PVI stopped there.
The Saxons tied it up when Sam LaFuria put the puck in the net to make it 1-1 with 9:20 remaining in the first period. And they only continued to score, with goals from freshman defender Griffin Boedicker, junior forward Evan Sterling, junior forward Kevin Diner, freshman forward Connor Madry and junior defender Zach Shames.
Langley had 38 shots on target as compared to only 6 for Paul VI, one of the more telling stats of the game. Paul VI only had one shot on target after the first period.
Though they won handily, the Saxons did miss a number of opportunities throughout the match. Late in the third period, Diner made a no-look pass to LaFuria, whose shot ricocheted off a player and was batted down by the timely glove of a Paul VI defender just in front of the net. Several times the puck was cleared just in front of the net by Paul VI defenders as Langley squandered a few more scoring chances.
The Ice Hockey team’s next game is Wednesday, Jan.11 at 4:30 PM against Landon.
