As soon as the bell for Saxon Time rang, students poured into the gym lobby in an array of costumes ranging from banana suits to boxers to suspenders. It was time to film the Saxon Shake, Langley’s rendition of the recently popular Harlem Shake videos.
“I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of people that came out,” said senior coordinator Drew Armstrong, “it went really well; Matthew McDonald’s raccoon mask was a highlight for me.” Administrators helped move the students into a large clump, with the students in costumes at the front.
Such a hype and a large body of students cramming into the gym initially worried the administrators, but these worries were soon alleviated. “It was great and the kids were responsible and they cleaned up so it was awesome,” said Ms. Statz.
With senior coordinator Shy Daraeikia filming from atop the bleachers, the students danced and threw beach balls, Frisbees and boppers in the air. It took three tries for the coordinators to get the perfect shot.
After the students exited the gym, the beginning scene was shot with senior Justin Speros as Otto the Saxon dancing alone in the middle of the gym.”This is gonna go down as the greatest Harlem Shake video on YouTube,” said Speros.
The “Saxon Shake” was considered by students as good way to promote unity and school spirit within Langley. “It was a lot of fun and really crazy. We should do it again,” said freshman Sahara Strestha.
Sophomore Leslie Rivers added, “It was insane because it was so huge.”
