Always there at the football games cheering up the crowd, Langley band has had a strong presence in terms of Langley spirit. With new leadership, Langley band has been thriving.
Last year, Mr. Kirchenbauer served as a long-term substitute band teacher with Mr. Andrew Gekoskie on medical leave. After Mr. Gekokskie chose to come back, Mr.Kirchenbauer resigned. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Gekoskie left to teach at a local elementary school and another substitute took his place. Because of complications, students were not able to go on their annual trip which, for that year, was in Nashville, Tennessee.
This year, the students met Mr. Doug Martin. Under his new leadership, the band received straight ones at the competition which is a first for the Langley bands. “Band has changed so much. We’re lucky to have found Mr. Martin. The band has adopted a new attitude of hard work and appreciation,” said junior Leah Surratt
Looking towards the future, the marching band will eventually have a color guard. The marching band is in season from August to the end of football season. “The Langley bands have had great talent. But now, we’re playing, sounding, looking, and working a new band,” said junior and drum major Ben Parker.
Next year, they also are in the process of planning an international trip to Spain. This will be the first international trip for the current students in band.
After numerous disruptions, band students are proud of how far they have finally come. “We’ve finally settled like a family,” said junior Sisi Holderman.
