Softball tryouts were held over the past week. To many peoples’ surprise, the number of players on each team is fairly limited. There are only eleven players on the varsity softball team and ten on the JV squad. Although this might seem sufficient, in that only a softball team has only nine players on the field at a time, that would result in only one substitute in each game for JV and two for varsity.
Because the number of girls on the team is limited, the possibility of forfeiting any game is a worry. Although this is feared by both coaches and players, they are all glad that they reached enough girls to from both teams.
Compared to other years, in which the teams consisted of as many as fifteen girls, this year has been noticeably smaller.
What is the reason for the smaller teams? It could be the fact that many graduating seniors filled the team last year or the lack of interest towards the sport in general.
“I think that if everyone on the team stays healthy throughout the season then we don’t have anything to worry about,” said freshman Emily Templin, a member of the varsity softball team.
