This past weekend, Jan. 6-7, Langley’s Indoor Track and Field team participated in the High School Showcase at Christopher Newport University. Up against the competition of forty participating teams, including local schools such as South Lakes, Langley athletes displayed good performances in various events.
One standout performance was that of senior Jonathan Ledesma, who after running a preliminary time of 8.37 in the 55m hurdles, went on to win 5th overall in the showcase finals.
Senior Meigan McManus represented the girls side of team with a qualifying mark of 15-09.00 in the preliminaries of the long jump on Friday. In Saturdays showcase McManus won third overall, with another jump of 15-09.00. “The dry air made it difficult for many of us to compete well, but the hot temperature on the track helped warm up my muscles,” she said. McManus also participated in the girls pole-vault showcase and placed 4th with a height of 8-0.
With a matching height of 8-0, far surpassing the starting height of 6-0, senior Kelly Martins took 1st in the regular pole-vault competition on Friday.
The infield was also occupied by pole-vaulters and juniors Robert Yu and Logan Besougloff. Yu placed 1st in the boys competition on Friday with a height of 11-6, while Besuogloff competed in the more competitive showcase on Saturday placing 3rd with a height of 12-0.
Additionally, sophomore Alex Jacobsen qualified for the showcase with a preliminary triple jump distance of 40-01.00 and tied for 3rd in the final competition with a jump of 41-05.50.
As districts near, the track team will prepare to face the competition by continuing to strive for district, regional, and state qualifying times in the upcoming Liberty and Episcopal Meets. Senior Allison Brady, who ran the mile at CNU said, “This weekend it was a solid effort by our entire team and we are right where we need to be at this point midseason.”
