Yesterday’s much anticipated meet was the last hope for many varsity track and field athletes. With only four meets during the regular season, each is equally important. This particular meet was the last opportunity for runners, jumpers, vaulters and throwers to qualify for the District meet.
Unfortunately, since Fairfax County closed “all FCPS activities and schools” yesterday, according to langleysports.org, due to inclement weather, students were deprived of the opportunity to make this esteemed competition. With the winter season being only three short months, there is no time to reschedule the meet because districts, regionals and state are all coming up within the next few weeks.
“I was really mad that the meet got cancelled! I hadn’t pole-vaulted at a meet all season, because not all the meets have pole vaulting mats available. Saturday was my last chance to make it to Districts,” said freshman vaulter Margaret Flessas.
However, others were not fazed by the cancellation, saying that they were happy to have the morning to sleep in, rather then have to wake-up at the crack of dawn in order to make it to the 7:30 am meet.
Although many athletes couldn’t compete, spring track is right around the corner. “I’m determined to pole vault at a meet this spring- I’m ready for the new season,” said Flessas.
