Bandwagon- a party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers. The bandwagon that everyone jumped on after February 5? The Giants.
I can understand rooting for the underdog since this is what I normally do. My favorite team hasn’t been in or won the Super Bowl since 1992, and hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2007, let alone won a playoff game since 2005.
However, rooting for the underdog changes to jumping on the bandwagon when the only reason you start to like them is because they’re winning.
Okay, so maybe you hate Tom Brady because he and the Patriots beat your team in the Super Bowl XXXIX and that’s why you’re rooting for the Giants, who just happen to be the division rivals of your team. That’s a valid reason.
Loving the Giants just because they won Super Bowl XLVI? Not such a valid reason.
This is the exact same thing that happened when Tim Tebow stepped into the limelight. When he and the Broncos won: “We love Tebow!” Kids at some schools even got suspended for ‘Tebowing’ in the hallways. When they lost: “Tebow’s horrible, we hate the Broncos.”
Like them and stay or don’t like them and leave. Make up your mind.
Everyone has a team that they like and everyone likes their team for a different reason. I personally like the Redskins because I live in the DC/metro area and I grew up in a Redskins family. And yes, I will admit that the Redskins do not play well when it counts. Heck, most of the time we don’t play well even when it doesn’t count.
My point is that I stick with my team. Through the losses and through the not-so-frequent wins, I will proudly wear my jersey and shout ‘Hail to the Redskins,’ even though being a Skins fan is absolutely heartbreaking sometimes. Just because they lose doesn’t mean it’s time to abandon them. I wasn’t alive when they last won a Super Bowl, but I will still be a fan when they finally come back and win another.
