The Saxons, coming off an amazing win last week rode their momentum into Friday night’s game against a very strong Madison team.
Off to a good start, the Saxons took an early lead and things were looking good. As the game progressed, Madison forced a Langley safety and then, upon the punt, converted it to 7 points.
A first half dominated by Langley was tarnished after a touchdown by Madison as time expired.
A close game was an understatement in light of the events to come.
With two minutes left, Madison scored a touchdown and converted the two point conversion to take a 24-21 lead. With the ball back, the Saxons marched it down the field to the Madison 19 with 53 seconds to go.
After penalties and miscommunications on both sides, Langley finally brought out the kicking team to attempt a game tying field goal.
Flashbacks from two weeks ago when a busted extra point with two seconds left forced their first defeat.
As the kick went up, the air went out; a silent Langley crowd was in shock. Bad execution down the line ended the game for Langley as Madison proceeded to knee the ball after a missed field goal.
Heartbreak and disappointment were felt by players and fans alike. The loss brought the Saxons’ record to 3-2, five games into the season.
Heading into the future, things don’t look much easier as the Saxons take on the Stone Bridge Bulldogs next week, followed by the Yorktown Patriots on Oct. 12.
Both these teams are football power-houses and the Langley team will sure have their hands full.
