By the facts, it’s millions of ticked off hockey fans and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue lost. We just want to watch hockey, and they just want the money.
The NHL Lockout has lasted nearly three months and still no answers have developed. In simplest terms, the owners of NHL teams want a percentage of the players’ money. The Collective Bargaining Agreement, or CBA, is an agreement between owners and players on where the money goes. Players currently receive 57% of all hockey-related income in the NHL. The owners, however, want to bring this number to as little as 45%.
If you Google “NHL Lockout”, you will hear the name Gary Bettman thrown around a lot. He is the commissioner of the NHL and trying to reach a new CBA with Donald Fehr, the National Hockey League Players’ Association Director. Donald Fehr represents the NHLPA. He works for the players and tries to get them the best deal possible. After all, they’re the ones doing all the work.
Donald Fehr doesn’t exactly have a great track record, however. He previously worked for the MLBPA, working for professional baseball players. He was responsible for a seven month-long baseball strike in 1994-95 and even a World Series cancellation.
The NHL generated $3.3 billion in overall revenue last season. That is also the amount of money that the NHL is losing as we speak.
Bettman came to the NHL from the NBA, so he is not exactly native to hockey either. Under Bettman’s direction, this is the second NHL lockout in ten years (first lockout was in 2004-05).
The representatives of the NHL just talk and talk and talk and no real progress is made. Nevertheless, with no hockey in 2012-2013, it all boils down to a lot of money lost and a bunch of ticked off hockey fans. And if there’s one type of fan you don’t want angry, it’s a hockey fan.
