First it was the NFL, and then the NBA, then the NHL, and even the NFL referees. Not to mention dating back to the 90s when a world series was cancelled. Is this cycle of lockouts the direction pro sports is headed towards?
This insanity has caused much frustration, depression, and confusion over the past two years. Right now, currently the NHL is locked out and at the rate these meetings are going, the season will most likely not happen.
These lockouts have caused problems not only on the field but off the field also. The most famous of these problems was this year’s NFL matchup between the Seahawks and Packers.
This was the beginning of the season during the replacement refs’ era where Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary pass as time expired to wide receiver Golden Tate. In the replay it showed no touchdown but on the field they ruled it a touchdown. This wasn’t the only situation, the Patriots and Ravens in a recent Sunday night game still makes people wonder if Justin Tuckers “game winning” kick was good or no good.
As of right now the NHL seems like it is locked out for good. Speaking on behalf of most Captials fans, I am pretty upset about it. I most definitely look forward to Capitals hockey games during the season, but since NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and the players are not coming together, a compromise won’t be reached any time soon.
This isn’t just frustrating to fans. Millions of dollars are being lost as each weekend goes without a TV game. The CBA (collectors bargaining agreement) is an agreement between the owners and players, and currently it is attempting to increase the amount of money received by NHL players by 45%.
It isn’t just hockey- it is every sport. I’m tired of it and so are countless fans around the nation. The question is, when will this insanity end?
