Over the summer of 2012, anyone who followed sports thought that Oscar Pistorius was a hero who overcame great adversity to make the Olympics.
To refresh your memory, Oscar Pistorius is a double-amputee, meaning he has no legs. However, he qualified for the 2012 London Olympics, and actually performed well in both the 400 meter sprint and 4×400 meter relay.
But on February 14, Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder. Police reports say that Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, early that morning.
Pistorius claims that he shot Steenkamp because he mistook her as an intruder in his home. Pistorius is still facing murder charges, and could possibly serve a life sentence. A 9 mm pistol was recovered at the scene.
According to Pistorius, Steenkamp, after a heated argument with him, ran to the bathroom and locked herself in. Not knowing it was Steenkamp who was in the bathroom, Pistorius shot through the door four times and proceeded to brake the door down. He walked in only to find that is was Steenkamp who he had shot.
Steenkamp’s funeral was Tuesday, February 19. Pistorius attended a bail hearing the same day, and is still awaiting trial.
