Due to the lack of players this season, the JV softball coaches were in search of players who displayed the ability to succeed rather than solely considering a player’s talent. The result was a group of 26 girls on JV and varsity, some having years of experience, some having none.
Before the reported 26 players on both teams were reached in order to fill the needs of having subs, the process involved in finding enough girls to play on the team was achieved through the encouragement of players from the previous season. “My friend Melanie told me that they had space on the team and I’ve always wanted to try a new sport so I tried out,” said sophomore JV player Massa Sitta.
Other players decided to pick up the sport again, like sophomore Ariana Bowers, who played from first to eighth grade and recently decided to play again. “I had originally tried out for soccer, but I did not make it this year, thus prompting me to try out for softball,” she said.
With a wide range of skills on the newly selected JV team, everyone on the team has a chance to improve as no cuts were made.
JV coach Megan Kelly is confident that this season will be successful, as last season ended on a good note. “I just expect us to have a good time. If we win a game, that’s a benefit of playing, but we have a really good time at JV whether it’s during games or in practice. That’s a big expectation for me; that’s half the reason that I coach.”
