The girls varsity lacrosse team came storming back from a slow start, defeating the Woodson Cavaliers 15-13 in a hard fought contest at Langley on Thursday evening.
Woodson scored first and, led by their star player Laura Dunn, built up a 6-2 lead over Langley mid way through the first half. This was followed by a strong string of senior goal scoring by Langley with Hayley Soutter, Olivia Sisson and Rachel Wagner each scoring, and Grace Goettman scoring two consecutive goals to power Langley to a 7-6 lead.
“Hayley Soutter, a senior, had six goals. She was the top scorer and all the seniors really stepped it up tonight. Also, we started off down but picked it up and came back to win the game,” said sophomore Julia Byrne.
Woodson’s Dunn scored again to tie, but Rachel Wagner answered with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half to put Langley ahead for good. At the start of the second half Hayley Soutter scored her fourth goal, and freshman Halle Duenkel her second to extend Langley’s lead to 11-8.
Woodson cut Langley’s lead to one goal at the 15 minute mark but Olivia Sisson scored two quick goals less than 30 seconds apart, and Soutter and HDuenkel added one apiece to give Langley a commanding 15-11 lead with 2 minutes and 21 seconds remaining.
“We were expecting Woodson to really compete and they did but we just took control of the game. Our seniors and everyone stepped it up!” said sophomore Aubrey Zarella.
Woodson fought hard down the stretch, adding two more goals, but Langley’s earlier scoring cannonade had placed the game out of their reach.
The girls’ next game is at Oakton High at 7:30 pm next Thursday.
