Executive Sports Editor Emily Flessas interviewed Mr. Joshua Henry about his debut as head coach of the girl’s varsity tennis team, and his objectives for team this season.
Saxon Scope: How long have you been at Langley, and what subjects do you currently teach?
I’m new to Langley this year, but this is my 12th year teaching. I’m originally from Pennsylvania and taught there for six years. Since relocating to Fairfax County in 2007 I have also taught at Oakton High School and South Lakes High School. I teach government and U.S. history.
SS: Have you taught at any schools or coached any previous teams in past years?
This is my 11th year coaching tennis. I coached the Indian Valley High School tennis team, both boys and girls, in Pennsylvania. I was also the head coach for Oakton from 2009-2011, and South Lakes in 2012. Ms. Kathleen Stankiewicz and I also ran the intramural tennis program at Rachel Carson Middle School a few years ago.
SS: What is your goal for the team this season?
Last’s year’s team was very successful, going undefeated and winning the state championship. I want to build on [last] season’s success and the experience of the returning players throughout the season. We’re taking it one step at a time, but we are hoping to compete for the Liberty District Championship before turning our attention to the regional and state competitions.
SS: What do you believe is most important for your players this season?
While achieving success in competition is important, my main goal is for the players to grow as individuals, bond as a team and enjoy the experience.
SS: What is the best part of coaching?
I never expected to get into coaching tennis, certainly [not] for 12 years. However, accepting my first coaching position was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I enjoy interacting with players and the excitement of competitive matches.
Being able to work with students outside of the classroom gives a coach the opportunity to develop a different type of relationship with them, and watch them grow as individuals. The fact that it is outside during spring is nice too (except when it snows at the beginning of the season or I forget sunscreen). Overall, tennis is a great sport that people can play throughout their life and I enjoy being part of that.
