Success seems to have a different meaning wherever you go. The quality of wins, depth of losses, difficulty of schedule, and sometimes current attitude defines what teams every year take their respective playing field to get.
No matter how you define success, an undefeated season, or even just an extended win streak is one way to get it. Streaks are a phenomenon in sports that come along only so often and seem to be more prominent than ever lately.
One the several and probably more noticeable streaks in recent years has been boys lacrosse.
The four straight state championships have blown any expectations completely out of the water as the team looks for another to add to their streak this year. “I think streaks are thought of so highly in sports are because of the small belief that you or your team has become unbeatable,” said senior defenseman Brad Dotson. “The pressure is definitely there, but eventually the nerves start to fall away and it just becomes a fun experience.”
Of course the most recent and probably most overlooked runs was made by the Langley hockey team, going 14-0 with a perfect regular season, despite their one loss coming in the state championship against Briar Woods. “It was amazing to walk into school after every win and just have everyone you talk to ask about it when just weeks before, no one seemed to care,” said sophomore defenseman Will Clemson.
“Seeing some of the ground breaking streaks in professional sports is one thing, but being part of one is another,” said head Hockey coach Rob Faktorow. “I’ve never been more proud of a team to keep up as much focus as this one has all year. After all, to make a run like this just takes a skilled team and focus, which to me, is the hardest thing to do in sports.”
