After an off-season where the Langley men’s soccer team lost two of its biggest stars to graduation, the Langley men picked up where they left off last season by winning their first match 1-0 against Wakefield High School.
Langley midfielders, junior Sepehr Harandi and senior Thomas Salamone, helped control the possession in the first half of the game, resulting in a majority of the chances on goal as the Langley men kept the ball in Wakefield’s half. Wakefield was relegated to one solid chance on goal which was swiftly and successfully thwarted by the Langley defenders.
The only score in the game came at the end of the first half when midfielder Salamone (12) struck a bullet at the Wakefield keeper and sophomore Onur Marsan finished the deflected ball that the Wakefield goalie could not handle.
In the second half of play, the Langley men once again went on the offensive, but their efforts produced only a deflection off of the post on a free kick by senior Justin Galiani and a breakaway opportunity for senior Miguel Jubiz. Despite these missed opportunities, the Langley Varsity team walked away with a well-deserved victory, and the game provided Coach Amato with a road map to improve the team’s play in the coming weeks.
Sophomore goal-scorer Onur Marsan put it well when he said, “It was a good start to the season, but we definitely need improvement.”
Marsan may be correct, but a win is a win and the men’s team is off to the best possible start by winning its first match of the season. The men face tough competition in its next two matches against Westfield High (starting at 7:00 pm at Westfield on March 20th), and against Washington & Lee High School (1-2-0) at home on April 2nd at 7:00 pm. Come out and support the team.
