For the first time in a long time all the Langley’s women’s crew boats placed first, second and third, during the Darrell Winslow Regatta at Sandy Run Regional Park. Each team raced against seven local high schools: First Varsity Four (1V4), Lightweight Four, Second Varsity Four (2V4), and the Novice Women’s Eight.
Coxswain senior Adele Wheeler, and Rowers sophomore Katie Robinson, senior Ashley Doll, junior Tyler Seckar, and junior Stephanie DuBois competed in the First Varsity Four (1V4). After winning first place in their heat, they found themselves in the finals racing against Episcopal High School, South County High School, Fairfax High School, and Woodbridge High School. Their boat finished in first place by lengths.
“In the lightweight category, none of the other boats are really hard competition, but South County is big competition for the First Varsity four,” said sophomore Meagan Fountain.
The Lightweight Four had a straight Final Race that did not have a heat so Coxswain junior Sabrina Lamont, Rowers sophomore Meagan Fountain, senior Sierra Webb, junior Brittany Smith, and sophomore Nirosha Beekhuysen raced against McLean High School, West Springfield High School, Hylton High School, and First Colonial High School, taking home the first place win.
“We beat these boats by I believe like 40 seconds, which is a huge lead,” said senior Sierra Webb.
Coxswain sophomore Megan Kirby, Rowers senior Olivia White, senior Jenny Rossberg, sophomore Jenny Verhuel, and freshman Katherine Carris on the Second Varsity Four (2V4) also had a straight final and won first place in their two-boat race against Fairfax High School.
The Novice Women’s Eight placed third.
“It was a really exciting day and everyone was extremely happy with the outcome given all the hard work and training we have put in since November. We are hoping to continue placing in upcoming regattas and we are excited to see how State Championships go in May,” Seckar said.
