For many of the returning seniors and aspiring underclassmen from last year’s varsity girls lacrosse team who were disappointed in last year’s critical state championship game, the utter deflation of a game on Saturday left them with a pain that cannot be felt by many. As they squared off against Madison for the second time, they experienced a devastating 8-5 loss, leaving them, once again, with a state championship defeat facing a highly favored opponent.
“I won’t lie, it’s a very hard thing to deal with,” said sophomore Alexa Smith . “I’m not one to let out my emotions, but having this done a second year in a row really eats at you, and I don’t think I can say I have experienced anything more helpless,” said Smith.
“It was heart breaking to lose for the second time, but you know, we have to keep our heads up and keep moving forward, we’re not going to let this one thing burn us down,” said sophomore Bethany Basco.
This year they were 15-6 and strive to take back the state championship next year.
“It’s crazy just thinking about it, how all of us, especially the seniors, have stepped up. And just thinking how far we made it as a team, this team has grown together stronger than ever, and nothing will slow us down. We have made it all the way from running sprints on the fields, to coaches helping us, to the championship, and we hope to return again next year,” said sophomore Aubrey Zarella.
Langley’s varsity girls lacrosse team has been successful these past couple of years, but this year; they were unable to finish their season on a high note. They are a strong team that has bonded together and hope to continue to carry on the legacy and continue to play their hearts out and win games.
