In late August, girls golf teams from TJ, Madison, Marshall, Yorktown, and South Lakes came together at Hidden Creek Country Club for the 2nd annual Liberty District Cup.
With help from Senior, Captains Veronica Smith and Rachel Zmuda Langley’s Golf Team beat all five teams and clinched the title of tournament champions. “The captains have done a great job in keeping the team a closely knit group on and off the golf course” states Head Coach, Bob Hayne.
In the beginning “we were worried that TJ would beat us but once we saw we beat them, we pretty much knew we would win” claims freshman Kaitlin Bonacci. The golf season started the first week of August, and like most fall sports they practiced weekly to prepare for the tournament.
The Liberty District cup is very unique because unlike Districts the girls were able to compete as a team, rather than individuals. Liberty District coaches are resentful of these, and are contacting VHSL directors urging them to make districts team orientated.
This is Langley’s second time in a row winning the Liberty Cup. Sophomore Cathy Park claims that she “wasn’t really surprised we won” and “is glad that Langley got to keep it for a second year.” Although some key players graduated last year, the 2013-2014 team was able to prove they are still as strong as before.
The players are looking forward to districts, regionals, and hopefully states. “The State Qualifier is on October 22nd. Six of our golfers have already qualified to compete,” claims Hayne.
With strong turnouts from young talent such as Park and Bonacci, along with guidance from captains Smith and Zmuda girls golf is looking forward to another very successful season.
