“I believe that we will win! I believe that will win!” The student section of the Lady Saxon Volleyball team erupts as they clinch a spot in the volleyball state final.
After 4 sets the Saxons triumphed over the Forest Park Bruins in the 6A State semifinal game.
Aided by an overabundance of spirit the lively student section cheered on from start to finish. Thanks to a spirit bus organized by the activities office, students had the opportunity to spend $25 and ride down to the VCU field house, which was home to the tournament.
Coming off a regional championship the Lady Saxons had one goal in mind: Win the game. Although sloppy in regards to hit percentage (similar to a batting average in baseball) the Saxons took the first two sets home before giving up the third set. “For some reason our team always seems to take a set off and we have been fortunate it hasn’t cost us yet,” said Head Coach Susan Shifflett.
Propelled by the outstanding plays of seniors Sisi Holderman and Lexy Donaldson the team pulled out a fourth set victory and a chance to play for the state championship.
Senior Armin Ahmadi said “Prior to the game there was already so much hype and we knew if the girls played their game we could rock the stands and come out on top.” The student section was packed with fans making the journey down to VCU, but little pay attention to the dedication and spirit of the parents at the games.
Always outfitted in Saxon hats with horns and bells, the parents have been a driving force in the girl’s success. “Ms. Rivero Anez supplied us with green wigs and a ton of other fun costumes that amplified our spirit,” said senior Ali Cochran.
With eyes on a state ring and a championship in reach, the Lady Saxons are looking to solidify their spot amongst the best high school volleyball team to play in Virginia.
Coach Shifflett said that if “if we play the game like we should, and don’t take sets or even plays off, a title will hopefully be brought back to Langley.”
