Nik’s Picks: The Super Bowl
Just in case you didn’t know, this year’s Super Bowl Sunday features the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. For the first time ever, the Super Bowl is set to take place in the New York Giants/Jets stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where it will likely be 30 degrees during game time with the possibility of some snow. Over 100 million people will be tuned in to NBC to watch both the big game and the hilarious commercials. After the first two quarters of football, the lights turn to Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who take the stage during halftime. Hopefully the lights won’t turn off like they did last year after Beyonce performed!
The Seahawks and Broncos both had a league high 13-3 regular season record. This game truly is the best vs. the best, as both teams have shown throughout this season. The Seattle Seahawks are probably the most balanced team in the league. Their defense is ranked number one, and includes pro bowl players like Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor. While the Seahawks have the number one defense, their opponent, the Broncos, have the number one ranked offense, including the future hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning and receivers Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, Eric Decker, and Julius Thomas. There’s no question this game is going to be great. The best offense versus the best defense always makes a good game. But the Seahawks offense is not terrible either. Led by quarterback Russell Wilson and running back Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks offense is capable of being a major threat against an unsteady Broncos defense.
During the regular season, the Denver Broncos scored an average of 37.9 points per game and the Seattle Seahawks allowed only 14.4 points per game. When they go against each other on Sunday, the Broncos offense may not be able to score anything near their usual 38 points.
Nik’s Pick: Denver 27 – Seattle 23
It’s a tough call, but I think the Denver Broncos will become this year’s world champions. Great defense can’t always stop great offense. Peyton Manning is one of the best quarterbacks ever lived, along with Tom Brady, Dan Marino, John Elway, and Joe Montana. In fact, when I searched “best quarterbacks ever” on Google, the first player shown was Peyton Manning, second Tom Brady, and third John Elway. Peyton Manning has started in two Super Bowls over the course of his 16 year career in the NFL. He won the first time, and lost the second time, both with the Indianapolis Colts. Now, during his second year in Denver, he looks to win his second Super Bowl MVP against the Seattle Seahawks stellar defense. I seriously think the Seahawks defense still has a good chance to stop the Broncos offense, especially since they have Richard Sherman, who, just in case you didn’t know, claims to be the best player in the league. It’s not false; he’s actually really good, and his heart for the game is incredible. It will definitely be a fun game to watch for all.
