The last time the Virginia Cavaliers won the regular season ACC Championship, Ronald Reagan was president, MTV had just launched, and the Oakland Raiders won the Super Bowl. Yeah, that long ago. The year was 1981; 33 years later the UVA Cavaliers are back in the champion position ranked 6th nation with a 25-6 record.
The Cavaliers have risen to the 6th place in victories over North Carolina, Syracuse, and Southern Methodist University, all AP Top 25 Teams. Quite the turnaround from last season, as the Cavs finished with a 23-12 record and the 4th Virginia is led by sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon, and Senior guard Joe Harris, who lead the team in points per game with 12.6 and 11.4, respectively.
The record-setting Cavaliers are directed by 5th year cioach, Bennett, who guided the Cavs to a 16-2 record in ACC match-ups over the 2013-14 season. Bennett was awarded NCAA Coach of the Year, thanks in part to an unbelievable 13-game winning streak in the latter half of the season. Bennett’s success can be credited to his coaching style, as he instituted his effective motion offense, which puts opposing teams into disarray on the court.
The atmosphere in John Paul Jones Arena, where Virginia plays, can be compared to the famed Century Link Field where Seattle Seahawks play. The Virginia Cavaliers’ achievements this season have come as a godsend to all UVA alumni and fans, who have waited years to see their Cavs become regular season ACC Champions. These fans, along with the whole nation, will be waiting to see how the underdog Cavaliers will perform in the NCAA March Madness Tournament, beginning on March 18th seed in the nation after impressive place rank in the ACC at the end of the 2012-13 season.-year Head Coach Tony.
