MLB Free Agency
Ah, it is upon us; the baseball offseason — the most exciting time of the year – for some, however, as other teams have to watch their star players fritter away as they leave to obtain more money from other larger market teams. Even though there are many players already moving around the country, many players remain undecided. So without further ado: my predictions for the 2015 MLB offseason.
Already Signed: David Price signed with the Boston Red Sox; Jeff Samardzija the San Francisco Giants; Zack Greinke the Arizona Diamondbacks; Ben Zobrist and John Lackey the Chicago Cubs; Matt Weiters the Orioles; and Jordan Zimmerman the Detroit Tigers.
Already Traded: The San Diego Padres traded Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox; the Chicago Cubs traded Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees; the Atlanta Braves traded Shelby Miller to the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2015 first overall draft pick Dansby Swanson.
Free Agents
Jason Heyward: St. Louis Cardinals; 7 years, 185 million. The Cardinals have lost a few players this offseason, and seen their rival Cubs make moves, so they will have no choice but to pay the steep price to sign the 26 year-old.
Justin Upton: Los Angeles Angels; 7 years, 155 million. The Angels need a left fielder – and frankly another hitter – as Albert Pujols and Mike Trout are the only big hitters on their team at the moment.
Yeonis Cespedes: Miami Marlins; 6 years, 133 million. Giancarlo Stanton and Yeonis Cespedes, along with help from new hitting coach Barry Bonds, will be unstoppable.
Alex Gordon: Kansas City Royals; 4 years, 90 million. Alex Gordon seems to thrive in a small-market relaxed city like Kansas City, which is why I see him staying.
Chris Davis: Seattle Mariners; 6 years, 165 million. Davis’s late season run is going to earn him quite a payday. “Nelson Cruz was on the Orioles and went to Seattle, so why not Chris Davis!” said sophomore Max Trautwein.
Dexter Fowler: New York Mets; 4 years, 85 million. Fowler is a perfect fit in New York, making this prediction very easy.
Johnny Cueto: Los Angeles Dodgers; 5 years, 145 million. Cueto struggled in the American League, and the Dodgers have a whole at their number 2 starter, making Cueto a nice fit.
Scott Kazmir: Washington Nationals; 5 years, 105 million. The Nationals already lost Zimmerman to free agency, and will obviously try to stay in the mix of the 2016 World Series discussion, after their botched 2015 effort.
Trades
Arizona trades RHP Archie Bradley and RHP Braden Shipley for Colorado’s Carlos Gonzales and Jose Reyes. The Diamondbacks are in win-now mode, and have a void at shortstop after the departure of Dansby Swanson.
Cincinnati trades Jay Bruce and Aroldis Chapman for Texas’s 3b/Of Joey Gallo and RHP Michael Matuella. The Reds have no point in keeping Chapman or Bruce, as they are rebuilding. Meanwhile, the Rangers showed last year they are in win-now mode when they acquired Cole Hamels.
Los Angeles Dodgers trade Kenley Jansen and Yasiel Puig for Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco. Cleveland needs something to get their fans to watch the game, and what better than Yasiel Puig himself. The Dodgers, on the other hand, don’t need more fans, and just need better starting pitching.
