Langley Girls Basketball Wins State Quarter Finals
On Saturday, March 5, the Girls Varsity squad won a nail-biter to advance in their quest for the state title
Basketball is at the center stage of Langley Winter sports. It’s not often that a school has a player scores over 1,000 points over a four-year varsity career, carrying the team to a state championship. The player who has accomplished this feat and brought the Saxons a long-awaited and well-deserved championship is senior Paige Galiani.
But before we talk about the player, we must talk about the team. The Lady Saxons Varsity squad won a nail-biter at Old Dominion University on Saturday, March 5. Taking down Landstown High School of Virginia Beach by a narrow margin of 34-32, the Saxons qualified for the state semi finals. Scoring half the team’s points, Galiani capped the night with 17 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc.
A historic 2016 campaign for the varsity team puts them at a current record of 25-5, one of the best records the team has achieved in years. The foundation of the team’s stellar play has been Galiani, who has averaged just over 15 points per game this season.
Arguably, basketball is the sport that gets Langley students more excited and proud of their colors than any sport. When a group like the current Girls Varsity team can pull of a state championship, it makes that notion all but certain. Congratulations to the Lady Saxons; the state championship is well-deserved, and won’t be forgotten any time soon.
